Academic stress affects emotions and health of students

Academic stress currently affects a growing number of higher education students, which is why all kinds of research must be generated to prevent diseases among the school population, said student Edgar Santiago Contreras Romero during the presentation of his receptional work at the XVII Receptional Experience Forum, organized by the Faculty of Pedagogy of the Universidad Veracruzana (UV).

He explained that all people experience stress, in all areas, however it becomes problematic when it exceeds the limits that can be considered positive (known as eustress).

Although there are few works related to academic stress, the university student said he found that students are subjected to it mainly during exam periods, when they sleep little, consume too much caffeine and eat little or not at all.

“Academic stress is that which students suffer through the process of changing the components of the teaching-learning process, as a result of the demand required in the experiences that take place in educational institutions,” he pointed out.

Among the factors that can cause it, he mentioned, are insecurity, which affects the daily life of young people; lack of employment; the violence; the environment (noise, lack of furniture, insufficient infrastructure) and technology (the student must keep up with technological development).

The person who is under constant academic stress may present physical (headaches, tiredness, fatigue, teeth grinding, dysentery, impotence, back pain, colitis), psychological (anxiety, irritability, indecision, restlessness) and social (withdrawal , conflicts with other people, absenteeism, difficulty accepting responsibility, arguing).
Contreras Romero pointed out that the last chapter of his work is dedicated to treatments that are generally used to control stress, such as: relaxation methods, psychotherapies, social interventions, medication prescription, health education, among others.

He recommended some relaxation exercises that can be done in small spaces and in less than 15 minutes, exercise for the eyes, yoga for the fingers, anti-stress routine (generally handled in offices), massage to relieve the pain of

breathing, as well as mental exercises.
The student of the Bachelor of Pedagogy concluded that academic stress affects the body, mood and social state, for this reason he considered that it is important to generate information to prevent diseases that disturb school performance and achievement.
